His father is a civil engineer and his mother is a South African nurse. He attended Beechen Cliff School. Additionally, he also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) drama school.
He made his screen debut in 1994’s Drop the Dead Donkey’s one episode. Later, he had his first major role in BBC drama ‘This Life’. In 1999, he appeared in ‘Human Traffic’, ‘Mersey Blues’, and ‘A Man’s Best Friend’. Additionally, in 2000, he became part of ‘Bomber’, ‘Gangster No. 1’, ‘A Likeness in Stone’, and ‘Offending Angels’. In addition, Lincoln has performed in plays, including Hushabye Mountain in 1999, the widely praised Blue/Orange in 2000 and 2001, The Late Henry Moss in 2006, the Parlour Song in 2009, as well as radio productions. He directed two episodes in the third series of Teachers for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best New Director (Fiction) in 2004.
In April 2010, Lincoln was cast as Rick Grimes, the protagonist, of AMC's live-action adaptation of the post-apocalyptic horror comic book television series The Walking Dead.
He won Golden Nymph Award in 2007, IGN Summer Movie Award for Best TV Hero in 2010, Satellite Awards for Best Ensemble – Television in 2012 and Saturn Awards for Best Actor on Television in 2017.
He married Gael Anderson, the daughter of musician Ian Anderson, in 2006 and they had two children together named Matilda and Arthur Clutterbuck.
