Jenna Johnson represented the United States at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, at 16 years old. She won three medals: a gold medal in the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay, a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay, and a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly. She won a total of three medals in the event: a gold medal in the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay, a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay, and a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly. Johnson also swam for Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa, which she attended, in her freshman and sophomore years.
An alumna of Whittier Christian High School, Johnson set the national record of 53.95 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly and the D1 record of 23.07 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, in the year 1984. While living in Southern California, Johnson trained at the Industry Hills Aquatic Club in the City of Industry, California. She received an athletic scholarship to attend Stanford University, where she swam for the Stanford Cardinal swimming and diving team in various National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Pacific-10 Conference competitions.
As a 19-year-old, Johnson received the Honda Sports Award for Swimming and Diving, recognizing her as the outstanding college female swimmer of the year in 1985–86, and was a runner-up for the award the following year. In the 1986 FINA World Aquatic Championships, Johnson won three medals: a silver medal each in 100 m freestyle, 4×100 m freestyle, and 4×100 m medley. Likewise, at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, she won seven medals: gold medal in 100 m freestyle (1985), 4×100 m freestyle (1985), 4×100 m freestyle (1987), 4×100 m medley (1989); silver in 100 m freestyle (1987), and bronze in 100 m butterfly (1987), 100 m butterfly (1989).
