Ray Allen’s father’s name is Walter Sr. and his mother’s name is Flora Allen. He grew up in a military family and spent much of his childhood moving around.
He attended high school in South Carolina where he played basketball and was named the state’s Player of the Year in his senior year. He then went on to play college basketball for the University of Connecticut where he established himself as a standout player, earning All-American honors in his junior and senior years.
Career
In 1996, Allen was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fifth overall pick in the NBA draft but was immediately traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. In his rookie season, Allen made an immediate impact, averaging 13.4 points per game, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. In 2003, Allen was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he continued to put up impressive numbers. During his time with the Sonics, he set a new NBA record for three-pointers made in a single season, with 269 in the 2005-2006 season. He was also named to the All-NBA Second Team twice.
In 2007, Allen was traded to the Boston Celtics, where he formed a “Big Three” alongside Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. The trio led the Celtics to the NBA championship in 2008, with Allen hitting several key shots in the decisive Game 6 of the Finals. During his time in Boston, he set a new record for most three-pointers made in an NBA Finals series (22) and earned his ninth and tenth All-Star selections. In 2012, Allen joined the Miami Heat, where he played a key role in the team’s championship run in 2013. In Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, he hit a clutch three-pointer to force the game into overtime, which the Heat eventually won. The following year, the Heat made it back to the NBA Finals but were defeated by the Spurs. Allen retired in 2016 with a career average of 18.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, and a place in the record books as one of the greatest shooters of all time.
