    Scott Wilson was born on March 29, 1942 in Thomasville, Georgia, U.S. He was born as William Delano Wilson, but best known as Scott Wilson. He is the son of Jewel and Thomas Wilson. He attended his first three years of high school in Atlanta, but graduated in 1960 from Thomasville High School when his mother moved the family to her hometown 200 miles south of Atlanta after the death of his father Thomas Wilson.

    He made his screen debut portraying characters suspected of murder in his first three films. In his debut film, Wilson played a murder suspect in In the Heat of the Night (1967). His follow-up role, in the same year, was in the film version of In Cold Blood, based on the book of the same name by Truman Capote. Director Richard Brooks cast Wilson and Blake in the starring roles specifically because they were unknown at the time. The director passed over better-known actors, including Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, for the parts. The film earned Wilson an appearance on the cover of Life Magazine, published on May 12, 1967.

    Other film credits include The Gypsy Moths (1969); The Great Gatsby (1974); The Ninth Configuration (1980), for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe; and The Right Stuff (1983). In 1984, Wilson tied with another actor for the best actor honor at the Cartagena Film Festival in Colombia for his work in On the Line. The actor’s later works include Dead Man Walking (1995), Pearl Harbor (2001), Monster (2003) and Junebug (2005).

    His haracter acting won him guest spots on several television dramas, including The X-Files, The Twilight Zone and CSI. He portrayed Elvis’s father in the TV movie Elvis and the Colonel: The Untold Story in 1993, and a governor from Wyoming in The Jack Bull in 1999. In 2007, he played Reverend Potter on the TNT series Saving Grace. He popularity soared, however, with his portrayal of Herschel Greene, a veterinarian, farmer and recovering alcoholic who helps his comrades survive after a zombie apocalypse, on AMC’s The Walking Dead. He made his debut on the popular drama series in 2011, during its second season.

    He is best known for playing Hershel Greene on AMC’s The Walking Dead after his Golden Globe-nominated performance in The Ninth Configuration. Appearing in over 50 films, he is remembered for his work in The Great Gatsby, Pearl Harbor, and Junebug. He later starred in Netflix’s The OA.

    He married Heavenly Koh in 1977, she is an attorney and artist. Scott Wilson died on October 6, 2018 at the age of 76. His reported cause of death was complications from leukemia. He died just a few hours after NYCC. The premiere episode of The Walking Dead’s ninth season, “A New Beginning”, which aired the next day, was dedicated to Wilson’s memory which is shown in the final credits of the episode.
