    His mother, Janice was a model and teacher's assistant, and his father, Melvin Earl Combs, served in the U.S. Air Force and was an associate of convicted New York drug dealer Frank Lucas. He grew up in a public housing project, and his father was killed for being an associate of drug kingpin Frank Lucas.

    He graduated from the Roman Catholic Mount Saint Michael Academy in 1987. was a business major at Howard University but left after his sophomore year. In 2014, he returned to Howard University to receive an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities and deliver the University's 146th Commencement Address. He said that he was given the nickname Puff as a child, because he would "huff and puff" when he was angry.

    In 1993, after he lost his job at Uptown Records, he established ‘Bad Boy Records’ along with Arista Records and The Notorious B.I.G. In 1995, ‘Bad Boy Records’ released the Faith Evans debut album titled, ‘Faith’, which also featured Mary J. Blige in the single, ‘Love Don’t Live Here Anymore’. In 1996, he was the executive producer of the R&B band ‘Total’s’ self-titled album, which did reasonably well on the charts. The hit singles from the album include, ‘Can’t You See’ and ‘No One Else’. In July 1997, he came out with his debut album titled, ‘No Way Out’, which was released under the ‘Bad Boy Records’ label.

    In 2000, he was one of the producers of the album, ‘Life Story’ by the American hip hop band, the Ice Cube album, ‘War & Peace Vol. 2’, Carl Thomas album, ‘Emotional’ and the album, ‘Shyne’. In 2001, he released his album titled, ‘The Saga Continues’, which was a success on the music charts. The album featured the tracks, ‘Bad Boy For Life’, ‘That’s Crazy’ and ‘Let’s Get It’.

    In 2004, he was one of the producers of the album, ‘Tical 0: The Prequel’, which was by Method Man. The album peaked at the music charts and also received good reviews. In 2008, he was one of the producers of the track, ‘Freak’, which was part of the album, ‘In and Out of Love’ by American R&B singer, Cheri Dennis.

    In 2009, Combs formed the musical group Diddy – Dirty Money and released the critically well-reviewed and commercially successful album Last Train to Paris (2010).

    On February 26, 2014, Combs premiered "Big Homie", featuring Rick Ross and French Montana, as the first single from his mixtape MMM (Money Making Mitch). On May 20 and 21, 2016, Combs launched a tour of Bad Boy Records' biggest names to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the label. On November 5, 2017, Combs announced that he would be going by the name Love, stating "My new name is Love, aka Brother Love. On January 3, 2018, he announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he had changed his mind again, and will be using the new name after all.

    He has won three Grammy Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards, and is the producer of MTV's Making the Band. In 2018, Forbes estimated his net worth at $825 million, making him the second-richest hip hop recording artist.

    He is the owner of the clothing line, ‘Sean John’ and has also launched a men’s perfume named, ‘I Am King’. He also owns restaurants.

    In 1994, he had his first son, Justin Combs, with his ex-girlfriend, hip-hop fashion stylist Misa Hylton-Brim. He had his second son, Christian Casey Combs, with his girlfriend, actress and model Kim Porter. His son Justin later played football at UCLA.
