Family, Childhood and Education
Steve McNair’s father, Selma, worked as a farmer. Her mother name is Lucille McNair. Steve’s father and mother did not live together during Steve’s upbringing. He had four brothers, Fred, Jason, Michael, and Tim.
Steve McNair enrolled at Mount Olive High School in the fall of 1987, where he became a multi-sport athlete, excelling in football, baseball, basketball, and track. As a junior, McNair led the Mount Olive Pirates to a state championship in football. Along with playing quarterback, he also stood out as a free safety. In 1990, McNair intercepted 15 passes, bringing his career total to 30, which tied the record set by Terrell Buckley at Pascagoula High School.
Career
Steve McNair played college football for the Alcorn State Braves, where he won the 1994 Walter Payton Award as the top player in NCAA Division I-AA. In the 1995 NFL Draft, McNair was selected third overall by the Houston Oilers. After starting six games over his first two seasons, he became the team’s regular starting quarterback in 1997, continuing in that role as the Oilers became the Tennessee Titans. McNair led the Titans as their starting quarterback through 2005.
Following the 2005 season, McNair was traded to the Baltimore Ravens, where he played two seasons before retiring in 2008. McNair led the Titans to the playoffs four times, including a memorable run to Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. His final playoff appearance came with the Ravens in 2006. Over the course of his career, McNair was selected to the Pro Bowl three times, earned All-Pro honors, and was named Co-MVP of the league in 2003.
Tragically, in 2009, McNair was shot and killed in a murder-suicide by his girlfriend at the age of 36.
Award and Achievement
McNair was the first African-American quarterback to win the AP NFL MVP award, and remains one of only four African-American quarterbacks to have earned the honor, alongside Cam Newton, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson.
