He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 9, 1959. Kaelin grew up Catholic and was from a modest and middle-class family. His father, Al, served as a liquor salesman, and his mother, Izzy, as a nurse. He does not have any siblings. He gained the nickname “Kato” as a child after Bruce Lee’s character from the 1960s television show The Green Hornet.
